Overview
Child support is based on the policy that both parents are obligated to financially support their children, even when the children are not living with both parents. In Hawai’i, there is no need for the parents to be married; only paternity and/or maternity need to be demonstrated for a child support obligation to be found by the court.
To determine the amount of child support in each case, the court is required to follow a set of guidelines published by the state. A number of factors are input into the formula, such as the number of children and the income of the parents, and the required amount is reached. Other factors, such as custody and alimony payments affect the final amount of child support.
